For our Shorebird display at the 50th Annual LIDCA Show on March 5, I am trying to nail down more info about one of the carvers. I think I recall Don McKinley (maybe McKinlay?) from the old US National shows. We will have a Golden Plover carved by him - but I do not know (or recall) from whence he hailed.

Anyone know his hometown? (Maybe in Canada?)

Thanks!

Steve, Unfortunately Don McKinley has passed away. He was a very talented shorebird carver and also gave carving seminars. A friend of mine and his wife attended one which lasted a week and everyone got to carve and paint an avocet. He also spoke at carving meetings. I attended one and it was very interesting. One thing he stresses was that painting a shorebird well required a very smooth carving ; "as soft as a baby bottom" were his words! Larry Appleton of Guilford Ct has some of his carvings. His # is 203 415 2197.

I checked with several people, but didn't get a definite location. Someone said L I , but someone else said Kent Ct. His longtime partner, Carol Kinney, also a carver, now lives in Virginia. If I get more info I'll contact you! Stay well, Sandy

Steve,
I think he was from CT. maybe Old Lyme. Like Sandy said Larry would know. Send me a PM and I can give you Larry's number.

Glad you provive that info, Captain! Hey \, does that lab in the avatar have a cowlick or is he sprouting horns?

Hi Steve,
I talked to him a while ago but don't recall where he lives. He carved a few shorebirds for us a while ago, when Gene owned the Company...pre-96.
I still have the patterns and molds but haven't had the time to fire them up.
Later partner,
Lou

Championship Wildfowl Carving. 3mpetition, representing skill ... Don McKinlay, Madison, CT. Hooded Merganser ... grouping of Decoy Carving Woods,.

Found this with a quick Google search. As I recall, I talked with him at Westlake.

Good morning, Lou~

Good to hear from you. Thanks so much for the information. I just got up to make some "table cards" - which we use to ID the decoys, artwork and gear at our LI Decoy Collectors Show - so your note was very timely.

Hot off the presses:
