getting close to the end of ice fishing season

Got a late start to the morning but still managed a decent bag. Fished for 3 hours and ended with 20 Crappies. They ranged in size from 10 inches to 12 inches. The wind made for a chilly morning, so I had to be in my shelter most of the time. I expect no more than a week or ten days left of safe ice. 20220303_111846[1].jpg

Very nice! I?m going offshore for snapper and sea bass tomorrow. I?ll share some pics.

Nice day there Dave. Crappies are a lot of fun.

The ice in CT is pretty much gone, I'm heading north soon. There's still almost 30" on lakes in northern Maine. This time of year is my favorite to icefish, on a sunny day you can sit in a chair, drink beer and get a tan. Might go for a snowsled ride too, I have a couple of loops of around 250 miles that take me all day. [smile]

Hey Dave -

I see we both have the same refillable propane tanks. I love that system.

I believe we also have the same, or very similar one man flip over. I was out in mine the other day where the ice is still 30"'s thick. It is the landings that I have to be concerned about.

If you are interested, I can take a pic of where I put my Buddy heater. Gets it out of the way so there is more room up front for other stuff.

Nice catch

Mark

All,
thanks for your comments, it is always fun to go out and catch a meal or two of fish.

Mark,
I have run heaters both in front and behind, each way has it's advantages and disadvantages. Where I position the Buddy heater in this shelter seems to fit my style the best and keeps my feet good and warm. Only once have I nicked the line with the hot grill guard.

Report from today's adventure;

Light winds to start the morning. Forecast called for increasing winds thru the day, so I did the prudent thing and anchored my shelter. The forecast was not wrong. By midmorning the wind was brutal and felt much colder than the 38-degree thermometer reading.
The bite was slow but productive. Crappies ranged from 9 inches up to 12 inches in length.
Still have plenty of ice. It takes 29 inches of auger length to break thru to soft water. That is with zero snow cover on top.

This shelter is a Clam Kenai Pro Stealth (non insulated), my other shelter is a Clam Legend XL Thermal.

Got ya on the heater. I put a piece of 1" thick rigid foam in the shelter tub and put it under my feet when fishing cause yeah, the tootsies can get cold. I like the heater in back as it takes up less fishing space and makes it easier to get in and out for me as I'm a klutz. And I would melt my line 100 times.

I miss ice fishing, did a lot as a teenager in N Jersey in the lake near our home. Yellow perch was the prime panfish for us, they averaged 10-12"s. It was great fun.
