Snow goose hunting in a few weeks

Hello All

Its that time of year for me and my son to head up to western NY. to hunt the white bird. We have been doing this for many years now. Its more like a father son vacation for a few days. We hunt hard when we are out there. But we pack a picnic basket that Yogi Bear would be proud of. We have had some good days and a few bad ones also. Never a great day! but we did see the birds for one to happen. Wind wasn't right or the snow messed them up. But for the most part we always saw a ton of birds. Its cold in a pit blind in March trust me if you have never hunted one in western NY. or any place else its cold. But when things come together there isn't anything like it . Worth every penny and you will never forget it. Seeing thousand of birds drop from the sky at one time is about the coolest thing you can see as a waterfowl hunter. If you have never done it ! trust me ! try it once. If its a good day you will be back. Migration is a wonderful thing to watch. I have sat in fields for hours watching flocks after flocks of all kind of birds migrate. I'll always be a duck hunter but when you can't hunt ducks. Find a bird you can hunt and go. Enjoy the great outdoors.

Good luck hunting Anthony. I haven't been snow goose hunting for several years now. I used to go on Delaware Bay in January and February when I'd catch a good day and tide. I enjoy eating snow goose and like it better than Canada goose. I hunted small groups over water which is quite different than field hunting, but I did see big groups of birds that would go the the roosts they used, which were every 2-3 miles along the bay front in that area. Mostly I would get small groups of 2-12 birds that would trade between the roosting groups and would fly low over the marsh, and they could can be decoyed pretty easily-if you're in the right spot. H ave a great trip with your son.

Thanks my friend, we have been doing this for many years hunting I mean. Both of us and just about everyone on this site. Whacking birds isn't the main goal anymore for most of us. Enjoying the sites and sounds and the company is the most important thing to most of us. Been there done that I guess we can all say. Hunting over water like you did is always my first choice. Decoying anything on the water is the best for me. Working a few birds is way better then trying to work a flock. Everyone of us hunt a little different. But also we hunt the same in ways. Your way my way their way it all works what the tide and wind are right. I'll send you some pictures when we get back March 25,26,27, is when we will be hunting. Thanks for the feed back.

Hi Anthony,

I am going this week Wed-friday, there are birds in the finger lakes now but this snow and cold will keep them from moving. Hopefully by mid week. I also hunt out of a shallow pit and this year about 4k dekes. I use to hunt spring Canada's that is gone now.

Good luck with your hunt

Were going the following week! so I wish you the best. Timing is everything so happy hunting and save a few for us. We hunt over a few hundred decoys. It does not matter how many decoys you hunt over. If the weather isn't right or the wind your just hanging out . But its worth every moment hoping that big flock is coming down to your spread.

Good luck to you, Anthony. I know you will enjoy your time while hunting.

That made me think of Chili's first snow goose retrieve. That was back in the early 2000s. In New Mexico, we have the lesser snows and good numbers of Ross's geese.
