Currently there are two variants of HPAI circulating in North America. It?s in wild birds as well as commercial poultry flocks and backyard flocks. This map is where it has been detected. If you encounter dead birds please report them to your state or federal wildlife agency. That is correct, it is not the HPAI H5N1 that was such a concern in 2006. There have been no cases of humans getting this 2022 variant. The highly pathogenic phrase is in regard to its impact on poultry and it does meet that concern. I am not aware of any humans getting sick from this variant but influenzas can be transmitted to humans from birds. I was just trying to make the DHBP members aware that there might be a local health advisory since the situation is evolving rapidly. The influenza viruses that really scare the epidemiologists are the ones that jump between birds, pigs and humans.

Yep, I believe the consensus is that 1918 pandemic jumped from pigs to humans at Fort Riley and began phase 1 and then the extremely virulent mutation developed in the trenches of France before spreading world wide.

Brad, variants within the H5N1 strain of avian flu are transmissible to humans. One of the highly pathogenic among H5N1 is the Asian variant. Why I opted to give white geese season participants a heads-up prior going out.

MDNR has confirmed swans, geese and snowy owls infected with the H5N1 variant in St. Clair, Macomb, and Monroe counties on March 24. Michigan Deptl of Nat. Resources Wildlife Division officials are considering cancelling the annual nuisance goose round-up in southeastern counties. Michigan Dept. of Agriculture officials are encouraging domestic poultry producers to take precautions to prevent transmission to their flocks. These findings are part of the response to broader testing after the HPAI variant was identified in a poultry flock in Kalamazoo County on March14.

PA just had an eagle and five hooded mergansers test positive for HPAI. Be careful and report dead or sick birds. Do not handle. Greater threat to domestic poultry than humans though.

A "back-yard" poultry flock in Menominee, Michigan has now been documented to be infected with the avian flu variant H5N1. First case in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in domestic poultry.

 Spring Farm on eastern long island ny is closing after 82 years in business because of avain flu in their birds. County came and euthenized all of the ducks and pheasants. Was a great game farm and a supplier of game birds. Dave was a real gentleman.

Last year our records show 21 species of birds at our feeder by June 1. It was a very sad day this year when I took the feeder down! Putting the birds well-being before our window pleasures. We captured and turned in a red-tailed hawk to our local rapture recovery center. We await an email on findings. At the time 2 weeks ago they were quarantining all birds brought to the center. The next step I suppose is to kill all birds brought in that test positive to protect the injured they have been treating.

It will be interesting to hear what their diagnosis is on that red-tail. NPR/Michigan reported this morning that Washtenaw, Livingston, Kalamazoo, Hillsdale, MaComb and Menominee counties have reported positive cases of avian flu in birds sampled.

A small group of Rufus-sided towhees were bouncing around the yard and deck yesterday. Haven't seen them since I lived in Barbeau area.
