Possible Classifieds Rule Change Discussion

I want to revisit the below Classifieds rule that has been in place for many years.

Posting items not belonging to you is not allowed.
    • Re-listing items found online, e.g. Craigslist, is strictly forbidden, unless you own said item.
The rule was put in place years ago, at a time when site activity was very high, mainly to prevent the Duck Boat/Hunting Forum from being littered with items for sale. This can quickly get out of hand. One look no further than FB Groups to see what happens when folks post ads for stuff they do not own. I've seen some groups become swamped with classified listings from folks who find a "good deal" they themselves do not want to buy but want to share with the group. That can just get to be too much to wade through, especially when the items are usually too far away to be of any consideration for myself and most everyone else.

Additionally my philosophy for this site has always been it is for the benefit of its members, not outsiders. Listing items for sale by third parties benefits an individual with no ties to this site. My position has always been sellers needs to promote their own items. Granted, the buyer gets benefit too, but given the number of items that could get posted to the number that will actually be bought by a member the benefit didn't seem worth the clutter.

Having said all that I do realize times change and the risk of downsides that a rule prevents may no longer be significant enough to warrant the rule. In this case I am unsure.

So I want to open up for discussion should this rule be removed. Do you want people posting ads for third party items? Do you think allowing members post deals found elsewhere will not get tiring and offers enough benefit to the members?

So I'd like to hear your feedback on this possible loosening of the rules. Lastly, I did have one idea. That being to create a sub-forum to the Classifieds forum called "Seen Elsewhere" where you could repost classifieds for duck hunting related items you do not own and are not interested in buying yourself but feel someone else here might like to have the item.

All inputs and point of view appreciated.

I'm fine with present rule, however, do not have opposition to "Seen elsewhere" as it might help members find something they are looking for? Either way, I appreciate the website and your efforts.

I think the Seen Elswhere is a good solution especially if someone has posted they are looking for a particular item.

No strong feelings about posting links to DUCK RELATED items IN THE CLASSIFIED FORUM. Prefer not see ads or for sale items mixed with the content here on the Boat/Hunting forum.

And I am fine if the majority here prefers to keep the classifieds for member-sold items only.

I also recall quite a bit of rancor a while back that some members were upset that linking FB Marketplace or Craig's List or EBay ads here brought them too much attention and drove up prices.

(In fact, I came here for advice on refinishing after I bought a Merrymeeting Bay duck boat from Ebay, and I think there were some members here at the time who may have been bidding against me. To my knowledge, that boat was never posted here until I bought it and came asking dumb questions.)

Your house, your rules, Eric. Do what you think is right, regardless of the feedback from us peanut gallery members. That's worked pretty well so far!

I agree the seen elsewhere may be helpful for folks looking for a boat that they then might use the remainder of the site to work on.

I have added a new forum called "Seen Elsewhere" for members to relist items of interest that are for sale by a third party. Hard to find and specialty duck hunting items are the intended content for this forum. Please do not post mundane items such as jon boats and plastic decoys for those are easily found everywhere, rather use this forum to share unique items and bring them to attention to members of duckboats.net that might not otherwise see them.

You mean I cant post all those antique Carrylite's I see on eBay??

Like Joel's mom said, "Just use your best judgement. We trust you."

Eric

Carl will live up to that about as well as Joel did, given the right temptation . . . . . [;)]
