Good morning, All - and especially carvers~

After a Covid-inspired hiatus, we are once again holding a decoy contest at the Annual Show of the Long Island Decoy Collectors Ass'n on March 4 in Hauppauge. See Anthony Babich's post for more info about the Show itself. The last Contemporary Decoy Exhibition was in 2020.

Here is an excerpt from a letter we are (belatedly) mailing out to scores of carvers:

January 2023

Dear Carver~

The LONG ISLAND DECOY COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL SHOW will once again feature a CONTEMPORARY DECOY EXHIBITION in Hauppauge - on Saturday, March 4, 2023. The Rules have remained the same as those of the 2020 CDE.

NOTE ~ We have added a new feature ? the SHOWCASE ? to allow carvers to exhibit any birds common to Long Island ? including songbirds, shorebirds, wading birds, waterfowl, raptors, et cetera ? that they have carved anytime in the past.

Carvings can be any posture and include any sort of base or mount.

Each carving will identify the species, the carver?s name and hometown, and the year.

Each carver may enter up to 5 carvings.

The SHOWCASE is simply an exhibition and will not be judged.

All the best,

Please do 3 things:

1. Note the new feature - the Showcase. This asks any carver to bring up to 5 pieces of any bird (likely to frequent Long Island), regardless of when the carver made it. It is not a competition - just an opportunity to show what you do. Otherwise, we still have the contests for gunning stool (Al McCormick Class) and mantelpiece birds (Shang Wheeler Class).

2. Spread the word. Our mailing list is modest - and the world of social media is beyond my reach. So, please let others know about the Show and the Decoy Exhibition - by whatever means is/are within your "wheelhouse".

3. If you carve, please bring some birds on March 4 (no mail-ins this year).

Thanks again to Anthony Babich, please see: https://www.lidecoycollectors.com/annual-shows

BTW: This year is the 100th anniversary of the first-ever decoy contest - held in Bellport by the Pattersquash Anti-Duskers Ass'n in the Summer of 1923.

All the best,

SJS
