Real Names - One More Time
Those that have been here for any length of time know that it is a requirement that you use your real name, or close variant. At one time we had open registration but that ended when people didn't read the rule at sign-up and registered with web handles instead of their real name. Once the registration process started only those using real names were validated. Roughly 1/2 were never validated for not reading/following the rule. Recently we made a change to the sign-up form which brought the rule to attention better and greatly reduced rejected registrations. However, after doing that some folks have taken to modifying their accounts AFTER they are onboard. Unacceptable. I have contacted numerous folks about this and it usually is unpleasant. I've been challenged, insulted, and ignored. Enough is enough. We are now going to a zero tolerance policy. After one warning accounts will be deleted for violating the rule. I'm giving one warning for the benefit of someone who signed up before the rule was placed in effect and wasn't aware. If you see someone in violation please direct them to this post. This rule is not up for debate. Below are examples of what is acceptable and what is not. If you want to associate a screen name you use at other sites here then edit your profile and place it in your signature.

John David Doe (Acceptable)
John D (Acceptable)
J Doe (Acceptable)
JDD (Acceptable but not very friendly)
Idaho John (Acceptable)

Duckwhacker (NOT Acceptable)
DuckGod (NOT Acceptable)
AutoLoader (NOT Acceptable)
Big Woody (Not Acceptable unless your name actually is Woody)
I could go on forever but hopefully you get the picture.

Finally, to those of you that find this rule objectionable or want to challenge it, don't. Not trying to be rude or insulting but you should choose another online waterfowling community. We have our own way of doing things. If it's not to your liking or makes you uncomfortable I encourage you to find a community with rules more to your tastes.

I have met people on this site and I have met people from other sites...when you get together it is hard on others to try and remember that Quackerstackerduckguts name is really Antoine or Percy. I see this forum as a bunch of guys that strive to actually get together and hunt and have fun..not a bunch of wannabee's.

And I'll add that because of this requirement, I've never seen an avatar here that I couldn't let my kids see. Man some sites out there are down right embarrassing not to mention just plain skanky. To think the guys using them are proud of that!

Thanks Eric. Good rule. I kinda miss Wicker T but this makes a lot of sense.

Eric,

What are the degrees of freedom?

Titan will be upset if I have to drop him from my "handle". Nobody wants to upset a fat chocolate lab in the off season. He's fat and grumpy...

Oh wait, that's me...

Is mine close enough?

I often wonder why people don,t use there name on a site like this. Is it acase of self importance or is it that they think everyone is looking for them? Hmmmmm

my nickname in the community is swampfox always has been always will be. BUT, due to the fact of the rules, I complied and must say it was the best thing I've done online. It is a alot cleaner atmosphere here than any of the other sites i frequent. And the people are better too.

Eric, bring the hammer down. It's your site....I have always been a supporter of the "real names only" rule.

Re: Real Names - One More Time In reply to
YAA, drop the hammer Eric is right. Real names is like when they have a video camera trained on the strikers, everyone tends to behave a little better knowing that their actions will be called to account at a later date in time. Not that I'm against the right to strike however I've seen some pretty reasonable people do some dumb things when they thought no one was looking. Anyway the calibre of conversation on Duck Boats is hands down the highest of all the BB's that I frequent. It's a good rule and I have advocated it on other sites.

Well, I do miss some of the finer avatar photos\movies that I have seen on the net and I do miss trying to figure out who SmackAndWackAQuack is every time I get to meet a fellow hunter at the ramp, BUT......OK. Can we please have the dumb smiley faces???????? so I know when I am supposed to think something is funny.
And to think, I was just going to change my name to DucksDieForMeAndSoDoTheLadies!

At the top of the scren click "Edit Profile" and then on "User Profile". I'm fine with Bomber since it's part of your real name and a nickname not just some screen name.

For the record

A user account was deleted today for viloation of this rule. It's not the first time and probably not the last. The straw that broke the camels back was the "nameless" individual challenged the rule and was sarcastic towards requests to comply. Rest assured if you want to be deleted that is a sure fire way. Ask for it, literally, and we will be more than happy to comply with any request to be banned. Admitedly my patience have grown thin with folks who thumb their nose at me and the site rule and I won't waste one second ridding them from my site. My time is in very short supply and I refuse to waste any of it on someone who seeks the benefits this site has to offer but won't give me courtesy.

Eric..excellent point.

IMHO we ought to put our or approximate location too.
For those of you worried about identity theft..maybe even the just the state or a section.i.e"SE Pa"

It really helps with the classifieds, but when someone relates info,it is often helpful
to know their geographical context.i.e."it was darn chilly this morning when I set out my decs this morning.

You have to question a persons intentions if he/she makes a fuss over using their real names. This site is a privilege and not a God given right to use. If they can't see the value, depth, and benefit in this site then they must be missing the boat!

It is comforting to know that there are still some actual people who enjoy hunting and discussing their common love for boats, dogs and anything associated with duck hunting. I believe the new generation of duck hunters ( Mallard Mashers,Pintail Poppers and Duck God ) were created when the Duck Killin' 1, 2, and 3 videos were introduced. Pick a name or a video they all are the same. Thanks for a wonderful websight. Pat Reichley

I do have to agree I do like using my real name here.

but Outdoorplay (ODP) is my handle, I us it on my CB, VHF, Forums.

its like being a truck drive with a handle like little rubber ducky.................

I do think a lot of people on the net. hide behind there handle and say things that they would never say if there real name was on it.

I am a member of many websites, organizations, and forums. I use all for different purposes. This website started out as a search for the "perfect" duck boat. Even though my account is less than 2 days old, I know now what it will be used for. When I want honest, intellectual opinions, help and "olden days" values, I will be right here. On other sites, I'm 1FowlHNTR. Here, I have the freedom to just be ME. Thanks to ALL for providing such a great environment.

Hi Eric,

I believe this rule will set duckboats.net above most other forums, because it will go a long way toward keeping things civil and clean. If a person thinks something is worth posting, they should own it by putting their name on it. Anonymity makes the cowardly brave.

Re: Real Names - One More Time In reply to
Great thread ! and I can honestly say I agree with everyone on the real name debate. I'm 43 and have had my share of nick names, most of which went away after high school. But since my hair was red as a youngster all my buddies on the baseball team and in the duck blind called me RED-DOG ! As it is now, most of those buddies are no longer in my life and the guys I hunt and fish with now just call me Kevin ! LOL I'm glad the hair color idea doesn't stick anymore because now most of my hair is grey and " GREY-DOG " just doesn't sound as cool as red-dog used too !! LOL I agree with the younger generation hiding behind nicknames or using a nickname for a social status ranking ! Kind of like the younger guys with all the "duck killa " or "Monster Muley " stickers all over their rigs. I S you not, just last deer season I come out of the local general store in Eastern Oregon where we hunt and a little 2 wheel drive pick-up with those dumb Azz stickers all over the back window is parked right in front of the door. Monster Muleys..Whack em and stack em...and a few others. I take a look in the back of the rig and there is a baby spike and a small forked horn !!!
I looked at the 20 year olds like..Are you serious ??? "
I guess somne people are raised different, but my dad and grandpa would have slapped the taste out of my mouth if I showed up in deer camp with my rig looking like that and I never got to shoot small bucks after prob age 16 - 17 !! Anyway, I love the real name idea, and I have looked over a few diff "duck" chatrooms and none of them compare to this one . I'm very new here and just from my first few posts I have recieved very positive feedback and I have been actually offered help for the questions I have posted. Just feels like I'm talking to guys I would stand around the fire and have a beer with! !
