"Friction" control on an outboard motor...

Folks,

For motors that have remote (steering wheel) steering... do you have a friction control as well? Or is the friction removed?

I am working on the new setup tonight and any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew,

None of the boats I've ever had used a friction device when set up for remote operation. I can't see any reason it would be needed for a remote setup.

Thank you very much Dave... I could only see using it during trailer travel.

I don't know much about these things, I appreciate the input.

I removed the friction last night - in order to fit the hydraulic steering gizmo. You're confirming that my instincts were right.

I have a Lowe roughneck w/ a 50hp johnson. Standard teleflex steering.

I wish that thing had a friction do dad. On the Goliath I can set my course, let go of the wheel, and she keeps on going without a problem. That Lowe, well that damn thing almost sent me in the water one day when I let go of the wheel. I'm sure there something I'm overlooking, but I never run the Lowe anymore so it's not an issue for me.

Yep, a Bankes Goliath has turned out to be about the best boat I could have hoped for for the hunting and fishing I do. I've had it from 10" to 10 fathoms with woodies and teal to black tip sharks.

Steering is great too!;-)
