Here I am less than 24 hour till leaving on my road trip. I stop at the mail box after work same as any other day. Only thing is, this time when I hit the down button for the drivers window it sounds like a garbage disposal grinding bones!

I pull into the drive go into the house and have my wife come give me a hand. I pull and push on the window while she bumps the switch to see whats up. Crap, this thing is going nowhere. It's done for, shot, broken, crapped out. Stuck halfway down and thats where it's staying.

I run back inside and make a rushed call to my local body shop. Even tho he is swamped with damaged vehicles from the local tornado and storms, he is going to see what he can do for me. If he can get parts in the morning, he will have it ready by the afternoon. If no parts are available he will at least get the window up and pinned in place so I can drive it down the road.

I guess I can be thankful it happened today and not three days into my trip. SH ** happens!

Dave,

Taking vehicle prep right down to the last second will just make you enjoy the open road even more. Have a great trip; don't sweat the small stuff, and take plenty of pictures to make us drool.

Dave,

No worries, it's probably just the regulator. No biggie. If it doesn't get to you in time before you leave, just have your body guy forward the part to Ray and have someone up there install it while you guys are fishing.

My passenger window motor took a crap yesterday evening, I called the glass shop this morning and he ordered a new one that showed up this afternoon...he will install it tomorrow at 8am. Mine is a 2002 GMC 2500hd and they have a weird cable system instead of gears.

Lee,

Mine is probably the same setup. I have a 1999 Silverado 4x4. My motor still runs but something in the cable or gearing will need replaced. Going to be right at $300 for everything installed.

I believe that cable and gear thingy is called a "regulator", and your guy is screwing you if he's charging you $300, unless that includes a premium for fitting you in last minute.

I replaced mine for 60.00. I bought the regulator/motor assembly on ebay and paid for the express shipping. This is the exact same part as the oem. Both are chinese manufacture now. It took less than 15 minutes for the whole thing after I read the instructions. You can check the gm dealer I think they wanted 130.00 for the motor and 175.00 to replace it. Here is the seller I bought mine from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EVqT3XEzss If you are headed that way why not get it shipped to your destination.

Dave,

Might just be easier and faster to replace it yourself. Based on all the stuffyou've posted/done over the years you can easily replace a window regulator. Here is the step by step.

How-to

I don't know what to tell you Dave. As some in the past use to say"It's always some thing"

Have a good and enjoyable trip. We will be looking forward to learning your adventures.

Good luck on your trip. Hope you get the window fixed quickly. Even if you weren't going on the trip you'd need it done quickly to keep the rain out. Keep 'er dry going across SD. It's been a little moist all the way, even out by Mt Rushmore.

I don't know why I don't just ask here first before doing anything. I have the panel off my door thinking it was just a stuck window...so when I take it in ,in the morning, he really only has about 10 minutes of work to fix it...oh well....the guy that owns the glass shop is also one of our biggest contractors so back scratching works both ways.

Dave,

Sorry for your last minute problems. But, I gotta say I'm glad this subject came up. I've got a '99 GMC Sierra that needs both windows done. My old mechanic quoted me $200. My wife said that would buy a lot of duct tape, forget it! One I get done remodeling the kitchen it looks I know what my next job will be!

Well, while I am here at work cranking out two pieces which have to be done and shipped before I leave, my body shop guy is cranking on my truck window. Looks like I can still hit the road this afternoon. Any other time I probably would have done the job myself but I can't be two places at once. hehe

Oh well, life is still good, onward and upward.

Took my truck in at 8 this morning and it took 1/2 hour. I already had the panel off and told him I would put the panel back on since I had to get to work...not really but he said that would save me some money. It took longer to get the tools around than to change it. Did the drivers side 2 years ago. the cables get bound up in them is the problem. Have fun on the road trip Dave.

My wife called me at 11:30 and said my truck was done and back in my driveway at home. I just got a few holes to drill and tap in my last piece at work and I'm out of here. I should be home by 2:00 and on the road by 3:30/4:00.

Wahoo!!! Talk to all you guys sometime after July 20th. Thanks for all the well wishes.
