BBSB & Dog question

considering a bbsb build (probably glen-l design) this spring. My question is, how much room does one afford while hunting w/ a dog? (a 90lb lab at that) any special modifications i should be looking in to?

Justin,
I'm considering the same thing. I have a derilict boat to strip down and do what I can with. It has a completely enclosed cockpit area that'll get opened up and lenght will go out to 13 feet from 12. More room will be added by gaining storage space under sides and front deck.

Any thoughts from anyone else out there?

If your going to gun with a dog you simply need a spot that is his place He will sit quietly and hunt longer if he has a place that is comfortable and dry especially when the weather is nasty and cold. For awhile I towed a pond box with the sneakbox and let the dog sit in the pond box. That worked fine but the pond box is just one more thing to mess around with My current box has a doghatch in the front of the boat and i have a canvas spray shield with a roof so he can get out of the weather This really works well for me I was worried at first that the dog would not be able to see anything sitting behind me espically around the spray shield for the main cockpit but it really is no problem .

Mine sits on the bow of my bluebill (12'6"), only problem is when hunting in the open marsh she tends to swivel to much.smDSCN0512.JPG

The bow is large enough for her to lay down on, granted she is only 75lbs. You might add some grit to the deck paint for added traction. -J

would there be room for him to sit next to me? i'd like the boat to double as an open water layout boat as well and would prefer him down in the cockpit w/ me as opposed to up high on the deck or in front of me.

It depends on the width of the cockpit and if you have any shelving inside. My dad hunted for years out of a 12ft barnegat bay sneakbox with the dog lying next to him in the cockpit. My boat has a dog hatch in the rear as you can see in the picture below and I reverse the canvas and shoot off the bow so the dog would be behind me. The previous owner of my boat had poles that would raise the dog hatch cover up to get his lab out of the weather. I do not hunt with a dog currently as my lab is retired from the field but even with the dog hatch I think I would have the pup lay next to me in the cockpit. Mine is wide enough that it would not be a problem. I'd rather have the dog out of the elements.

What do you think about muzzle blast and ruining the dogs hearing??

Any ideas of the"best" place to have the dog to avoid this ,while giving the dog the ability to see what's going on and be reasonably comfortable?
Thanks
