Thanks for your service Lt. Ethell, I'm sure you'd have rather been back home with that gal Rose, or fishing, or just having a life, instead of flinging bombs over Nazis

Wow, that is absolutely awesome. The Mustang & Corsair are my two favorite planes. As you may know, I'm into Radio Control and have 13 Mustangs & 4 Corsairs right now though not all are flight ready. Man, I'm heading out tomorrow to do some flying. You've got me pumped. ;)

Todd, nice pics.Sorry,I can't hr;p ID the one Navy aircraft.Maybe a Hell Cat.The Reno Air Races are coming up in a week or so,if you want to see many P51s and others,

thanks Todd, just can't see enough at that angle to I.D. that craft could be anything from a texan to a SBD. My fav is the p-38 lightning the "Fork tailed devil"

Todd,

Great, great stuff.

I think the plane you were asking about is an F4F Grumman Wildcat. They flew off of aircraft carriers during the Big War.

Haven't seen a post from you in a while. Good to hear from you!

im gonna say that aircraft is either a texan or a tbd-1 devastator. the douglas sbd-3 dauntless is the other "old plane" what a cool bunch of warbirds. my grandfather has a collection in his piper hanger of diecast ww2 model planes that stretch from one end to the other and includes almost every fighter allied or axis and a good many allied bombers. nothing like seeing the real thing tho.

on the wildcats the landing gear deployed from the fuselage not the wings and the wings sit at almost 180 degrees.

Nice shots! Aircraft in question appears to be a Douglas Skyraider, a Navy attack bird that flew for about 30 years for our Navy, our Air Force, and a number of other nations.

Brinn got the mystry plane. Its an A-1 Skyraider. They continued to serve in Vietam as rescap, called Sandys, mostly for the tan paint job.

Todd,

Nice pics. Where did you go tho see those? I absolutely love old warbirds. The plane you are questioning is a Grumman Bearcat I believe.

Odered by the Navy in 1944 to replace the aging Hell Divers and Avengers, (Dive Bombers), it arrived too late to see service in WWII. It was used exclusively by the Navy and Marines in the Korean War and was the primary strike plane in that war of the Marine Corp.

As helicopter rescue of downed pilots evolved the Sky Raiders, due to their ability to carry heavy armament loads and their 10 hour mission times, became the "wait on" aircraft that would loiter in the area of downed pilots providing aircover until the helicopters arrived to recover them. The Skyraider was heavily armoured against ground fire, (unlike the Mustangs and Thunderbolts that were also in service in Korea), and excelled in this application.

Sky Raiders continued as the Navy and Marine primary strike plane in Vietnam until they began to be replaced by the Navy with the A-6 INTRUDER in the mid-60's. As they were being replaced they were released to both the American and South Vietnamese Air Forces and continued their role as "wait on" downed pilot rescue and low level ordinance delivery.

All Navy and Marine Sky Raiders were painted Navy Blue so the one pictured is in Navy configuration. Sky Raiders used by the U.S. and South Vietnamese Air Force were camoflauged with many of those having the teeth, and eyes, remeniscent of the flying Tigers...

Intruders were so effective in rescue, (no fewer than two Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded to Sky Raider pilots for their actions in recovering downed pilots in Korea and another four in Vietnam), and in strafing and low level bomb delivery that the dive bombing doctrine evolved around its specific abilities and it is considered the predecessor of its modern counterrpart, the A-10 Warthog.

Cool plane that played a big part in both Korea and Vietnam but that is not well known...

Steve, Is that Sky Raider located up on Puget sound?

Sorry it has taken me a spell to get back to you. I try to get back before 11 years have passed.

Apparently, that motorbike was a chinese bike. Somehow, the chinese obtained the German designs just after WWII and copied them.

My understanding is that the BMW did not know that the plans had been leaked or stolen.

Interesting, Todd. It's a Ural/Dnepr/IMZ/BMW M-72 .
https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&id=DADF8B7D7310938A6A635B994366FA8DBA1B3DA2&thid=OIP.E6o4RiCyTEwNT6kXXLSzsgHaFM&mediaurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vintagebike.co.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgallery%2Fothersitom%2F1956-imz-m72-1-812x570.jpg&exph=570&expw=812&q=bmw+m-72&selectedindex=0&ajaxhist=0&vt=0&eim=0,1&ccid=E6o4RiCy&simid=608052731187693924&sim=11

The Russian's obtained the design specs. from the Whermact after the Winter War with Finland, due to the poor performance of their military motorcycle design. Very well traveled plans. Germany primarily used the BMW M-75, with the more traditional cast cylinder heads that became emblematic of BMW. BMW used a more modern telescoping front fork design on the M-72.

The story with the URAL line of bikes is that they look extremely cool, and the ones with a sidecar have power to the sidecar wheel. They offer them in all kinds of great paint schemes even some camo patterns for fall or snowy cover.

Ural_AIR_studio-3-edit.jpg

Apparently they are awesome until you try to ride them, and then they fall apart. At one time I was very interested in one, but the horror stories that I read about their cast parts breaking off, and the complete and utter disastrous quality control scared me away. For $18,000 it should run well and have good workmanship and quality components.

I opted for a good old Honda XR 650L. A single piston air cooled pig. It had over a foot of travel in the suspension and it never ever failed me. I threw a set of Military frogbags on it as panniers and put on a 4.7 gal tank. Re jetted the carb and man was it fun. Cost me all of $5000.

There is a reason that they have been in production since 1993.
They always work, and are simple to work on or modify.

The one drawback to my old set up, was it was a no go for a pillion. There wasn't enough seat to make it work.
