Dog names, What's the deal??

My yellow lab of 6 years is "officially" named, Whisky Creek's Flat Land Cruzer. We call him Cruiser. I was just wondering why all the extra names?

With a new dog on the way the wife asked why all the goofy names. I really didn't have an answer for her. Is there a reason??

Brad,

Whisky Creek is probably the kennel name. The rest is something the owner or breeder came up with. Some breeders automatically put their kennel name on the papers before you buy them. Some don't. The reason for all the names is that to be registered the dog needs to have a unique name. The AKC/CKC may reject the name you choose, or they may add a roman numeral after it to denote an individual dog.

Some breeders have "theme" litters where they either name or request you register the dog with a certain type of name. We one bought a beagle from a breeder who requested that we name the dog with the name of a song.

My wife and I have bred one litter of chessies. For various reasons we ended up naming several pups from the litter. A couple of them had names associated with vegetable because the newspaper we used in the bottom of the whelping box was an industry trade paper for the produce industry. Here are some of the names:

Gailforce Vidalia Sweet, "Vida", light deadgrass
Gailforce Roasted Red Pepper, "Mango", sedge, in southern OH bell peppers are referred to as Mango peppers
Gailforce Retrun To Sender, "Elvis", he came back to us twice before finding a permanent home

My lab is Bellmark's Muddy Waters, "Muddy", I'm a big fan of the blues.

You can make it simple or have as much fun as you like!

Tom

Thanks Tom,

Yup, Cruiser came from Wiskey Creek kennels and his dad was Cutty Sark and lots of others where named for fine scotch. I actually named our dog and used the kennel name...I just wasn't sure why, I just went along with the flow. The registration makes sence because how many Spots, Jacks and Dustys can you have??

I guess I will try and think up a goofy name for the next one!!

Brad, we just picked up an American, who is on his 10th week. His name is "Pip", but when combined with his "real" name, he is "Wine Country Pip".

Nothing like a puppy to bring a smile to the whole family. The 7 year old chocolate brings toys to him and drops them right in front of him.

He's a tough cuss - not shy at all and certainly not afraid. He's going to be interesting to train but he'll be worth it.

Good luck on your new pup, it's a beauty.

Brad,
My old Lab was "Rock Isle's Yukon Jack" because ------- He was a yellow liker
My wifes lil lab/ golden rescue mutt was "Bailey" which acording to a name book was a derivative of baliff meaning "keeper", we thought it fit.
My present yellow male is Danick's Waterwalker again for obvious reasons, can't keep him in the boat.
Our latest bundle of joy (also a YLM) Alamo's Charlie Brown which came from Steinbecks "Travels with Charlie" and "Peanuts" cartoon. "You're a good man Charlie Brown". We are waiting on the AKC to OK that one now.
Let them tell you what they should be called, if you listen they will. Don't rush, they will all come to pupupuupp.
Shiny side up,
Wicker T, Walker & Charlie Brown

Now this is fun...I want to hear more.

I have HR's Gitchi Gumee Agatha...I wanted to breed labs and I was going to call my kennel "Hoosier Rooster" hence the HR....Gitchi Gumee is of course the Ojibway name for Lake Superior...I trained Aggie on the shores of Lake Superior. Agatha is just a name that my wife was hung up on for some reason. She actually has a decent blood line(the dog, the wife is Czech/French/Yooper so she got ripped off on the bloodline thing)...one of the "chiefs"...thunder or super...one of those. There was a Canadian champ too. Don't care too much about that sort of thing actually.

Her pup, Stanley's full name is HR's Lord Stanley Red Wing....he was born 10 years ago when the Wings won the cup. That's a pretty simple one.

my crew is rowdy (HRCH UH Online's Cheap Thrills... Online Labs is my training partners business name, cheap thrills is a david allen coe song Im fond of), Da Juice who is HRCH Rowdydogg's Da Juice, he black, a killer, and white chicks dig him, Nasty who is HR Rowdydogg's Girl Gone Wild,HR Char, my moms dog who is named somewerid word then Lady Char, and she aint no lady btw, Scream who is TDI Princess Scream (tonna and david inc, my parents farm name, scream and juices mom was named warhawk princess... scream made so much noise as a young dog she named herself, and juice was so loud it took the juice to get him quiet! I orginally bought scream for a friend, and we he decided he didnt have time I bought her back.. when my mom was missing char while she was here, I let her take scream to have a dog. When I had someone intrested in scream to buy, my mom decided she wouldnt make a good hunting dog! bwhahahaha. She fell so hard for her, I let her keep her. Crazy dog will dive 10 foot to the bottom of a pool for a flipper!). The little rowdy puppy was lost this time last year was Onery, didnt get around to a registered name for him. He was the real deal, as much personailty, vigor, drive, birdness and just all around bad ass Ive ever seen in a puppy, and he got into my wifes hart as well, something no other dog has ever been able to do. I'll never forget this sick runt of the litter, at about 9 weeks old, charging into the dark into the dog food room and grabbing a frozen mallard hen, draggin it thru the house... my wife wasnt expecting a frozen duck in the house at 10 at night, so when she yelled, he took off running, holding this duck by the wing and the frozen breast banging on the tile. If he'd made it, he's the kinda dog you could have sold tshirts to people in the crowd... man I hate we lost him. We have more pictures of that puppy than all our other dogs combined! We've also had HR Swoop, that someone else registered and was a funny registered name, dont remember it, and HR Gambler (my partners gamble on a yellow dog) here, as well as Man (son of GRHRCH UH Jaybars MANhatten Transfer, Tram),and our retired summertime & during the grand houseguest Colt (town in ark my partner hunts at) (GRHRCH UH Onlines Desert Storming (FC AFC Desert Storm son)Harley), and the orignal one that started it all for me, SHR Stormy (from a book I read growing up)aka Fatdawg (cause she looked like whinnie the pooh she was so fat!). The girls in my vets office LOVE my dog names, and everytime someone remarks about one of my dogs names, they rattle off the whole crew! hehe.

Dog names for me mean a lot. When you run tests & trials, your dog's name being called out is when you get the recogntion for your hard work. I like macho names, cause I like macho dogs. None of my dogs are particualry big, I like smaller sleeker dogs. But I like big harts, and big desire. travis

I've got two new pups. Our seven month old "Alex" is out of a very red line of dogs, we call him "Things That Are Red For 500". We live out west so our other pup is Topbrass Montana Lonesome Dove, call name Gus.

Our older dogs weren't quite as creative, Kimo El Oso Dorado, Kimo. I had just moved back from years in Hawaii, Kimo is Jim in Hawaiian, El Oso Dorado is the golden bear. Funny thing about that name; I was project manager for a big golf course development here in montana and when it came time to name the roads, I suggested Golden Bear Drive as an offshoot of Kimo's name. The owner thought that was a great idea and went with it. I didn't understand why he was so receptive until I learned that The Golden Bear is a nickname of Jack Nicklaus. Maybe you can tell that I don't golf.

We have two other Goldens, Topbrass Wildfire Cody, "Cody", and Topbrass New Millennium, "Yoda". Most of our dogs come from Topbrass Kennels a breeder of field Goldens since 1968, we have to use the Topbrass prefix on her dogs.

The dog in my avatar (now deceased) was "Vaughn's Sophie Lou". Vaughn is my daughter. We called her " Sophia Maria Louisa Antoinetta Isabella Garcia Left Eye Lopez".
We were trying to be all inclusive in our naming so as to not offend any particular ethnic group. We probably should have included Mohammed :)

I think that a lot of it comes from the world of people with "...more money than they know what to do with.." as my g-grandmother used to say. Basically, it is an offshoot from people with horses, show dogs, and such where fancy names go along with the ribbons, trophies, tax deductions, and such.

BillS, and I have dogs from a source where names are very utilitarian. The format is call name from/from the kennel name. Call names are based on the order of litters from a kennel. So, the first litter is all "A" names, followed by "B" names for the second litter, and so forth. Names are not negotiable after registration, either.

My dogs for example:

Emma vom Hinterwald (5th litter from the Hinterwald kennel)
Ace vom Meisenhaus (1st litter from the Meisenhaus kennel)

Brief, clear, concise, practical, nothing Goofy.

Regards,

Bob

Both my labs were named with my kid's help. My daughter was three when we got our female chocolate and back then her favorite movie was Beauty and the Beast so she wanted to name the dog Belle. Registered name was Marybeth's Southern Belle.

When we got our male black lab, I had already decided on Luke as a call name. As a puppy Luke was always bouncing around so my children started calling him leaping Luke. It stuck so he was registered as JW's Leapin Luke.

Back in my college days I had a fraternity brother known as "The Mangler" that bought a female black lab to train. He called her Sally, but procrastinated on sending in the registration. One night after a few beers several of his brothers found the registration forms laying around and sent in the papers with a name of "Mangler's Mangy Mutt". He was not to happy when his registration papers showed up in the mail. I think he was able to get the name changed but I am not sure how.

I put more thought into the call name than the registered name. I personally like call names that are one syllable and are not similar to any commands. I guess if I were in the dog business or ran more hunt test, I would put more thought into the registered name.

Good luck with your new pup!

Jay C.

So you want a unique name and the kennel name isn’t an issue? Have fun!

To date my pups have been:
Jester Grouse Bane _______ call “Jesse” ___ Brittany
High Jinks Grouse Bane ___ call “Jinks” ____English Spaniel
Impetuous Grouse Bane ____call “Imp” ____English Spaniel
Beaver Bog Buddy ________call “Bogs” ___Lab
Salt Marsh Buddy ________call “Marsh” __Lab
As far as I know the only one I knew that I offended was my Aunt. She was a major Red Socks fan and she hated Wade Boggs. Well she sure ended up loving my Bogs, as we frequently hunted and fished out of her house up in NH.
