It's finally winter in MD.

that head throw pattern has become my signature decoy and I thnk there are five or six of them out there floating on various waters...I have one of mine and one of Mark Vanderhoofs currently in the rig and theres always room for another ne in the rig.....

Shoot me an e-,ail if your interested in a West Coast/East Coat trade on that bird, (or one like it).....

Don't tell this guy that.

Steve I don't have your e-mail addy anymore....It's a Polish thing...we lose things.

the drakes of both G.E.'s start doing it here as early as mid-December.....by this point in the season when a flock of eihter species comes in they start doing it as soon as they hit the water....if a single drake comes in they'll land next to a hen decoy and as soon as they stop sliding they'll do that head throw..

They're probably saying something as well but I can't hear it....I've known for a long time that my hearing was shot but didn't realize how bad it was until Jason Russell came out to hunt a couple of weeks ago....My brother, Jason and I were in the boat and Jason would say....."I hear an Eagle"....I'd say "I don't hear it" and my brother would say "HUH"?......

THe first morning I had told Jason that there should be Harlequins around and that one of the "colloquial" names for them was "little blue sea mice" because the drakes squeak a good deal in the air while they are chasing after the hens.....early in the morning Jason said...."I hear squesking"....I said "I don't hear it", and my brother said "HUH"?......about that time I see a pair of birds coming in low on the water getting ready to land.....I start yelling "HARLEQUIN...HARLEQUIN...shoot, shoot, shoot".......Jason says "should I shoot it"?....and my brother said "HUH"?......

I yelled "YES"....Jason's gun said "BOOM", I said "MIKE!" to send the dog and my brother said "HUH"?......

Doesn't have anything to do with the hens doing the head throw but its a fun story....

I hope your season went well Dave and you enjoyed your new boat.

My question is ..I thought the hen did that posture to attract the drake.I saw a hen do it just yesterday

Thanks
bob

Gotcha Bob....I don't know if the hens do it. If they're anything like the human race all they have to do is make their feathers look nice and pretty and a drake will come on by. Heck if they find a darn fermented bait pile even the ugly ones can find a man.

Considering the weather it's been a pretty decent season. Not to many complaints from me. Gonna end it with a bang. Bills and Cans tomorrow morning, Brant in the afternoon, Brant on Thursday, and who knows on Saturday.

Steve....that's a great story.

e-mail on the way.

Dave-
Our season just ended here in MA-late goose is still going.....
It was so warm this season-Really hurt us who only hunt in the salt....

We did take your advice and bought alot of the Ghillie Grass-
works great-just wish it came in wider sheets
Helped conceal the TDB

The warmth has been nuts. A friend who has a great "big duck" blind hasn't done much at all this year. No ducks limits as of yet. They even shot a few woodies on Jan 1.

Thank God for the return of the Geese here or the poor little buffleheads would be in trouble.

The stuff I have on the Goliath is holding up well. I really need more to truely hide the boat, but with the birds I chase it's not all that important. I don't even use the blind for seaducks.

I'm gonna add a roof next year and will probably get more Ghillie material to cover the boat a little better.

Great pic Dave. A beautiful decoy and a beautiful bird. Goldeneyes are probably my favorite diver.

Hey Tim, it wasn't just the coast that was slow the 2nd half, I did plenty of hunting inland this season and it was painfully slow there too.

dave, glad to see your doing well. about time we get some cold weather.

How are you doing on cork and cedar? I gotta order some cork but not sure if I need a whole case, and was also thinking about heading to jersey for cedar. let me know.

That is too funny.

I actually went in a few weeks ago and got my ears checked. The wife had been nagging for 5 years that I need a hearing aid. I finished the test and the audiologist said that my hearing is "normal."

So I say "Then your saying it's all in my head?"

Chuck

I know that may sound like a dumb questions, but first year drakes usually look a lot loke hens way into the season.

With waterfowl (and most birds) it's usually only the drakes that display until a pair bond is formed. So you might have seen a pair interacting. Or a juvenile drake doing his thing for the first time.

amd tuning out the wife are two, distinctly, different things.....

And I'll repeat that unless Debby is reading this and responds, at which time I'll respond.....

HUH?????

Steve

Awesome pics Dave. If you get a chance post a few pics of your Goliath. I'd like to see it.

Steve - good story it cracked me up.

Ryan-

Here's a pic from the Oct. season. We took a two man limit of wood ducks this day. There are maple branches on there to break up the outline, but they lost their leaves in the 30 mph ride back to the launch.

Here we are brushed up in the same spot but another day.

Here it is with the camo in the right places. I had plans of grassing the top with bundles of switchgrass, but never got around to it. Next year I'll just get some more Ghillie I think.

Bill....I'm starting on two cases right now. Do you need a sheet of 4"? You're welcome to one of mine. I have a guys name who I bought some nice cedar from at tuckerton. Right now I have enough for a little while at least, but could always use more. Shoot me an e-mail with your thoughts and we'll figure something out.

Also post some pics of some birds!!!

Thanks all for the compliments.

Dave, I will pop you an email soon. no real birds to show pics of. I didn't get my boat done, so I have been going out with freind, but between weather and days he can go we haven't been out since christmas. I even brought my 1 man MLB back and we didn't get the chance to use it.
