solution to pirate problem

Heck he at least didn't stop it so I give him his due. Well done on this. Even the french have the right attitude on this.
I'm so glad we are not acting like this is just the price of doing business in that area. I can't believe people who have family being held since last year are upset about this. They think this will escalate the violence, like the money these pirates are getting is going to human rights projects in Somalia.
There are plenty of pirates out there who are killing crews so just because this group hadn't yet doesn't mean much. No group of pirates stays non-lethal in thier tactics.

The sad thing is the same is happening in Central America but it doesn't sound as adventurous to do news stories about land based kidnappers... and they do often kill their captives.

I was thinking about this "problem" over the weekend and thought to myself that a couple of snipers would be able to take care of it if the distance wasn't too great. 30 yards doesn't seem to be much of a challenge until you realize that both the distroyer and the life boat were pitching in the waves and I'm pretty sure it it was dark. Nothing takes the place of good training.

that you think that the President, because he didn't stand on national television, pound his chest and holler "BRING IT ON" not only didn't know about this but also didn't authorize it? Tell me I mis-read your comment?

Personally I love the way he handled it....he lauded the Captains sacrafice, said everything possible would be done to bring him home safe then shut up and cut loose the boys that were assigned to polish the BIG STICK and get it done.....he didn't micro-manage it and IMO he didn't overact, or over talk his intentions....and how about that....after it was over he didn't immediately jump back in fron to fthe camera, repeat the chest pounding and proclaim...."MISSION COMPLETE".....

Personally I'm hoping he doesn't discuss it again.....its over...excellent job Navy and Navy Seals.....and excellent job President Obama....walk softly and carry that BIG STICK....

Steve

Amen Steve
I have read the shooters are Marine Corps snipers and have read that they are Navy Seals. Seals keep things so hush hush and never let "operators" get recognized (for good reason) that we may never know for sure. Can't believe the audacity of those Somali pirates threatening retribution. I supect if they try anything that Mr. Obama is going to quietly yes quietly kick their asses. Or he may just open a big ole can of whip ass on them and let them know what an arc light B-52 strike is like. I personally woud like to see pirates hanging from the mast of the Bainbridge on a regular basis.

it doesn't matter "who" did the shooting..."America" did the shooting and sent a message, I think, that we won't tolerate this kind of crap....plus we aren't going to warn you that we're gonna kill you either....

And WHEN did Pirates become such pussies? Geezzzz whoever thought that pirates would be surprised that they were gonna get killed for being pirates?.....Pirates of old are surely rolling in their watery graves over modern pirates sitting around saying to themselves....."damn....we never thought they'd shoot us for stealing their booty and kidnapping their crew"...."thats not fair"...."we weren't going to hurt anyone".....I bet the one that survived was screaming "PARLAY" at the top of his lungs as he swam away from that lifeboat........

Maybe some of the other Countries, (and KUDO's to the French for what they did), that have been accepting these "muggings" will join suit and send a message that "no one" is going to put up with this crap any longer---send a message that piracy IS NOT a cost of doing business......then again likely they won't....

Steve

do you think I REALLY thought that the man in the highest elected office in the country DID NOT KNOW?

yep and Bernie Ebbers knew nothing about accounting errors.......( I know thats a lie cause I knew the man.)

iT WAS A JOKE ! You know , after his comment about " opening negotiations " with the Taliban ( i'm sure i will be corrected on the verbage and true meaning of this statement ) , and the fact that one of his first acts being the closing Gitmo.

I was just curious as to how the liberal media would spin it since "they" hate the military so much. I guess its OK to shoot 3 poor men who were just trying to provide for their community since the ship was carrying food for their people who were starving.....oh....wait.
And why do they insist on refering to the captain as a hero........ He is not a hero , he was the victim in this , our guys lying on the deck of pitching ship in the dark , they are my hero's. I do however have the utmost respect for the man who primary action was to protect his crew.

I know most of the time you may make replies like this to see what kind of rise or " discussion " from the poster you can obtain , but dude , seriously , lighten up sometimes.

I do have a serious question though........... Is there some maritime law somewhere that says container ships HAVE to be unarmed ? I'm not talking about arrays of AA guns , and Dillon Aero's , but C'MON , Give-em something!

Even if they didn't outright kill them , a few holes in the small boats they are using couldn't hurt.

I'm sure that they ( pirates ) would probably just start shooting everybody instead of taking and holding hostages for years and that opens up a whole new can-o-worms.

Or......we (or France , or any other country ) could just start sinking any and every small boat carrying a few guys with grappling hooks , AK's and RPG's navigating international shipping channels off the coast of Somalia!

oh, The " Parlay" line cracked me up !

Amen again Steve,

And no it doesn't matter who made the shot as both Marines and Seal snipers are superb shots. I too was delightfully shocked that the French struck the first blow. Don't know if it was Legionaires or not but they rank right up there with the British SAS etc. It's time we do what we did to the pirates of Tripoli when we sent in commodore Bainbridge. To quote the President of that time "Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute" I heard some puke on C-Span this AM saying that we had left them few options economically except piracy. Their option should be desist or die. Remember the arc light B-52 strikes on Hanoi and Haiphong habour in Viet Nam. We still have B-52's and perhaps the Somali's need to wake up to the sound of hundreds of thousnd pounders exploding.

Well enough of this political blog on a Duckboat page,
Best to all,
Harry

as same.....your post simply showed no indication that it was a joke, at least to me, and I have seen others state that because he wasn't constantly on the news telling the World what his plans were that he was "clueless" as to what was going on.....

It's my understanding that its against Maritime Law for merchant ships to arm themselves.....and that includes, I believe, the crew.....arm them and all of the sudden you've got grounds for countries like N.Korea, to attack, or seize them, as WARSHIPS......plus there's this little problem with training, and popping someone that isn't a Pirate cause you're already spooked.....

Its a real can of worms for sure...Personally I think the countries that are plying the Gulf of Aden within the Pirates range should just hire security forces to protect them in the Pirate zone....gotta be a way to do that without violating Maritime Law.....post a notice that ANYONE that violates your "safe zone" will be repelled and then when one does give em the old shot across the bow.....with a bull horn notice that their sorry asses better be in the water in one minute or they'll "go down with their boat"...then put a few of the water.....

Personally I suspect atht dispite all the bluster that the pirates will be smart enough to realize that there will be ships they can attack and ones they can't and they'll just start going after the ones that they know aren't going to retaliate.....I guess we'll see how smar they are.....

I "see" that the President is taking steps to make sure this doesn't happen again....no word on what that "something" is.....perhaps it will be "negotiations".....fine...if that stops the problem then good...if not then .....well we still got the stick.....and I think the willingness to use it when our interests are threatened.....many here don't.....

As far as HERO's go if the news is right and the Captain did "trade himself" for crewmen then that makes him a hero in my mind....interestingly I was thinking abou this same thing last night......seems to me a HERO is someone who does something to help/save people that he wouldn't already do to save himself.....to me that makes the airline pilot that landed his plane in the river a great guy and all that but it doesn't make him a HERO cause he saved himself in the same action and did nothing different than he would have if he had been alone......but this Captain, if he in fact did trade himself. qualifies as a HERO cause he could have let them take the other men......

Steve

" warships " , that makes since now.
Give a counrty like N. Korea a few viable excuses to increase their navy and or shipping fleet.

still think we should put a special teams on ours ,,,,,or should I say , use a few of our container ships to offer free rides to few guys , , , quietly.

send in the troops !

I fear that once out of the handy poo poo bags that the tropper has in his left hand they'd be abandoned on the field of battle and then eaten by the bad guys.....wouldn't wish that on any dog....much less a wiener dog......

Here's a question I had about the "standoff"....the Navy was deleivering water and food to the life boat...why didn't they just drug the stuff so that everybody goes down in a drug induced coma? EASY PEASY SUDANESEY the Captain goes home with little more than a headache and the Pirates wake up in a holding cell somewhere?....seems like that would have been an easy solution.....these guys don't seem all that bright and at 120 plus degrees inside that zipped up life boat I can't imagine they'd turn down water........

Personally I'm glad they're dead....I'm sorry for any of the other hostages if it creates problems for them, and I'm sure it will, but I'm glad we don't have to deal with all of the "legal" bullshit that having them alive would have created.....

Steve

Wow. As werid as it to be talking about pirates... it's even odder for me to agree with everything sutton wrote.

I heard people all weekend critical about Obama and how he handled it... my understanding, he told them friday to do what was nessessarry to save the captain, and then saturday used the words 'lethal force' so nobody second guessed what he meant. Then he turned it over the the trained quailfied people on the scene to handle it as nessessarry. And they did. What a great thing, to see a President be a leader, instead of a politican and worry about the sound bite instead of the life at stake. Theres no shuda wudda cudda here, the end result is the good guys won.

If I had to bet about the pirate that said they will kill any french or American captives in the future, I bet he gets fragged by his own. No matter how bad azz they think they are, no matter how lawless, no matter how desperate, nobody wants to fade that kind of heat. And thats how it should be. travis

steve it was my understanding the lifeboat had 10 days of food and water, but only 1 hour of gas! Cause I said the same thingy, pizza ruffies and we all go home.
And it is my understanding the pirate that was capatured was on the navy destroyer negotiating when one of his co horts pointed an ak at the back of the neck of the captain. And the 3 on the boat where dead before they knew what happened. travis

was the one that was "negotiating" ever on the life boat? Seem s I had heard there were four there at one time and just "assumed" that he bailed when the shooting started......makes more sense that he wasn't on the boat cause I'm sure they would have popped him too if he had....still I had to get the "PARLAY" line in there somehow.....

I was also pretty sure that they had dropped water and food for them but that could have just been bad info as well......wonder how many times you could get away with drugging a bunch of em....show em afterwards turning over the hostages and then sending them back to the Pirate stronghold with a locator suppository so the drones could follow them in......

Steve

I understood that he was. there was 4 pirates, and what I understood one of them had orginally be overpowred by the crew, and the crew tried to negoiate a trade for their captain. The pirates said ok, got their man back, but refused to give up the captain (which IS the scene from poc movie.. pirate?!?). We laughed for a couple days over that.

Im sure they did drop food and water, but if I was taking food and water from the navy, i think Id wait until the supply onboard was exahusted before I risked being drugged.

I liked the call to other pirate groups to come help. I was like, what the hell, lets just blow them up. But i came to understand they would have come in pirated vessles with hostages aboard, preventing the 'shock and awe' we expected.

I bet those destroyer guys are pissed. Really, how many times in modern history have you got to shoot your big guns? Its all smart bombs, carpet bombs, and cruise missles these days. Im just thinking if your on a destroyer, you want to, well, destroy things. And do it with those big guns. Shooting a burst from your front 50 across the bow of drug dealers isn't probably what ya had hoped for.. and its certainly can't be as excited as blowing up crap with your 5 or 6 inch guns. travis
