"Old School Camo"

I see on the Drake website that they are coming out this year with a lineup of "Old School" camo clothing, looks pretty nice. I just might have too, need too, want too, buy a jacket to go with the launching of the BBIII this fall. :)

Funny you should mention.......I saw that yesterday and laughed. And by the way, who are they calling "old school"?

I was hunting way before that stuff came out and I'm only 45.

IMO, the woodland pattern is way more effective than any or all of the "new school" camos.

Charlie,
that is my fav pattern. I just might have to finally replace my 19 year old cabellas coat.

Believe it or not I have a 4 way parker from Remington I bought in 1985 with the same pattern. It's still in great shape. I used it last year hunting flooded timber in Ga. and the 30 years olds were making fun of my vintage hunting gear. Can't wait for this years season to make them eat their words. I'm 55 yoa and the game is still on. John Van Houten

Same thing here...Columbia Widgeon from '84 or '85. Two of them actually because I stole my brothers after mine wore out and then wore his out. Before that was the old Hodgeman WWII camo PVC POS that worked great and still do if you can find them(check the OLD TYME WATERMAN rack at big box stores).

Personally...that marketing bugs me a little bit. I've always liked Drake but I think a lot of guys that have been around may find the terminology a bit pathetic. It shows you how the demographic has changed in waterfowling....a ton of younger new guys that apparently don't have mentors of any sort or the class to recognize them but are "hardcore" and "extreme" enough to kill huge numbers of birds every year come hell or high water (based on adding up all the birds taken by all of their "crew" or any other "crew" they hunted with so they'll be cool like the pros....which is best shown to others by cramming 90 bands purchased on ebay and at shows on a $50 custom lanyard made just for them by the best lanyard maker in the world). I'll bet a lot of them will go "retro" and buy drake "Oldschool" camo and we'll read articles and hear exciting claims by extreme "pro-staffers" with soul patches and tattoos that will espouse the excellent qualities of the "Oldschool" style camo. "It'll put more dead shit on your strap"....that sort of thing.

Hey Drake, here's a great idea for your marketing geniuses....."Drake Traditional".

Sorry fellas, just a little rant there.

This is awesome! I love brown camo. Those guys at drake are really smart for doing this. There are a lot of people who have been wanting brown camo to return for some time now. IMHO it's the best camo pattern ever especially for hunting the salt marshes. Of course the big change between new brown camo and old brown camo is the price tag LOL.

Give Jay a talk show! Wow, you hit the nail on the head. Too much hype and video production crap these days. Some kids think that hunting is watching a DVD about hunting and then playing the video game...sad.

This weekend i was helping my dad move and we found about 4-5 sets of pants, shirts, coats, and hats that were all "old school" camo. I like the hats with the earflaps that fold under. He wanted to throw them away but i kept them. most were made of wool and i will never wear but still looks good. some still had the tags on them.

I am sold. I have a couple coats in that pattern, but they are not waterproof. I have a Max-4 that is waterproof, but decided I like the old pattern better. I think the old pattern works better too.

Awesome rant Jay A.!
You hit the nail right on the head. In my world, tan canvas is old school camo.
Thats what my father wore in a white Boston Whaler hunting scoter and oldsquaw in the 70's. We did good too!
I still have/use his old Gore-Tex brown camo LLBean insulated jacket and pants.
Old school my arse. I'm 46!?

I must be old school. I bought a coat with that patten back in the seventys and wore it hunting until six years ago. Still use it for working when it's cold. I think the material was Cordova it just wears and wears.

i liked steves term for it... blob o flauge. We where actually talking about trying to get some stuff made in it for a national retreiver event we're hosting, talking about how everyone would go nuts for the old blob o flauge. drake beat us to it! travis

I think everything I had when I started out duck hunting was the brown or green WWII camo (which is what that is), or Army woodland. I've still got plenty of Army woodland stuff, thanks to Uncle Sam, but I wore out the brown WWII camo stuff and started using the 'cool' ( at that time) Mossy Oak (original) bottomland. I've still got a columbia parka in that and thought it was funny to see Mossy Oak bring it back. I still think it's about the best all around for my timber/open water haunts. If I'm in true 'marsh', I usually have, well 'marsh' to hide in. LOL I doubt I'll get any. I've got some duckblind stuff, but I'd say the majority of my gear is solid dark green, solid tan, bottomland and shadowbranch.LOL

Cool stuff Charlie. I still have my original Columbia Quad parka from my very first season of hunting.

I too have my original Quad Parka, when I invested from the Carhart covered with Sterns rain coat! But that Quad Park continues to shrink, and will only fit my son now! Still says size large, but large is not as big as it used to be!

Same here Bill, Advantage wetlands...I love that jacket. But I am still going to buy something in Drakes "new" pattern.........They do make quality stuff, and stand behind it.

Great post...
Just remember Jay: "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American People."

I think the marketing genuises at Drake, Avery, et al understand that quite well.
