Hey guys been on the forum for a while lurking here and there, but anyway I'm in The Marines and just got stationed down here in San Diego. I'm from New Jersey and thats where I've done all my gunning so I dont know much about that Cali waterfowl scene except that I know I'm a little south and prabably going to have to travel. I'm just asking if anyone can point me in the right direction to getting started up out here.thanks.

Chris,
Thanks for your service to our country. You and your team mates are individuals that everyone should appreciate.
I don't know anything about southern CA. but some spots in northern CA would be Humbolt bay area, Klamath Basin area on Oregon line, Susanville, and maybe Reno,Fallon Nevada area.
Best of luck and stay safe.

Hi Chris,

I too appreciate what you are doing for our Country. There is good waterfowling to be had east of your location at Wister Refuge on the Salton Sea N/E of Brawley, Ca. From San Diego you take Highway 8 east to Brawley and then take Highway 111 north along teh Salton Sea to the refuge.

Wister Refuge is open satyrdauy, sunday and wednesday. If you can work those days into you Military schedule, then hit one of the Sporting Goods store in San Diego and ask them for revervation cards for Wister Refuge, fill them out and mail them in. Wedneasdays and Sundays are the easiest to get drawn for. Also try the PX at Camp Pendleton as they may have the cards too.

While you are in one of the S.D. sporting goods stores, tell them your situation and ask them if they can help you out with maybe getting hooked up with another waterfowler that hunts the local lake saround S.D.

If all else fails, see if you can get some strings pulled to hunt with some of the high ranking officers or even with the Camp Comander in their private duck blind at Camp Del Mar. Back in the early 1960's I hunted out of a Gereals blind there and thankfully I never got caught :^)

I now live in Oregon otherwise I'd show you right where to go down there.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Dave

Chris,

I'm a little above you in the Eastern Sierra. Not great hunting but, we do have ducks and geese. I would be happy to show you around if you make it up to this area.

I think some of the San Diego Lakes still offer duck hunting during the season?

Tight Lines ... Fred
