For my camo job I base painted the whole boat in Lou Tisch's "Open Water Dark Grey" (any darker cool grey paint would work, but his is an excellent quality), and then worked back to the lighter colors.

I did ALL of the painting on the sides in pretty much vertical lines to emulate cattail. I started with a few limited light grey "stripes" (to replicate dead and chalky cattail), then went to more a more profuse amount of stripes in "dead grass" color, then came back with some random "red/brown" short stripes (for cattail tops), then went back again with the dead grass to mute the red/browns just a bit.

For the decks, I got some dead tree branches and used them as "stencils" and basically did the same thing as the sides, only without as much coverage ( the thought being that I wanted the top to look more like water or a mud flat...water from above appears very dark, usually). The tree branches were not for the tree pattern, as much as to look like a NATURAL pattern...maybe erosion cracks or such. But again, not as profuse coverage of paint as the sides (and most of it with the light grey against the dark grey base...much less of the other colors on top).

Except for the base which was roller painted, all work was done straight from the spray cans and "freehand"...I thought that would give a much more random, loose and soft camo job...no real hard lines. In nature hard lines disappear from about 20 yards away.

I used the Hunters Specialties Camo Spray Paint (I bought the four pack because they did not have the single cans in the off season, but did not use the black or green...you can get it through Cabela's or a lot of sporting goods stores, but all I'd buy would be the dead grass and the red/brown). The light grey was light auto body primer spray paint (can).

All in all, I think the randomness and the softness of the job made it work. We'll see this fall.

"The Boys" after a workout from the new boat. We're working on the dog ramp right now, which attaches to the bow and folds down. I'll have some dog work and function shots of that to add shortly.
