trailer license plates

How do you guys hold them on? The plastic bracket that goes under the light is to low and flimsy. If you mount them to the frame they bend and crack from the water pushing and pulling at the launch. tie wraps break . I just don't want to lose another plate, going to DMV sucks.
 
Parachute cord, tied to the trailer frame on one traier, and to the stern of the boat on the other.

I believe strongly in jury rigging . . . . .
 
depends on if they have to be lit. if not, I have seen them mounted to one of the wheel fenders. if it does, make a aluminum or metal bracket to replace the plastic one.

I need to check the law in Bama as I have never had one on a boat trailer and have never been stopped or questioned.
 
This is on my to do list. I'm going to mount my lights and license plate to the top of my driver side guide on. I saw it on a trailer at my ramp last year and said " Hey that's a great idea I think I'll do that " (for the same reason you listed). Well here it is almost a year later and I have to thank you for reminding to me at least look at my to do list so I can "Hey I think I'll do that" !! [smile]
 
yeah I don't know the law either in NJ. Pulled off the ramp one year must have fell off in the water went the whole season and never got pulled over.

Got the cabela guide on with the plate bracket, lights out of water and visible. A friend used a piece of winch strap so it would move and not break.
 
Boat trailer plates are Not required down here in Alabama, but they are for utility trailers. Not sure of the exact reasoning but believe they consider the trailer covered under the boat registration.
 
Definitely move plates & lights up onto guideons. You can get the wrap around brackets that go around PVC pipe that's over guide on for very cheap on ebay. Being the build it yourself type I actually made my guideons from rd. sign gal. post tubeing. ( Discarded of course) and slipped the PVC tubeing over uprights. Simple, cheap , works perfectly and no more broken lights or tag bracket from icey boat ramps or lights not working from submersion when loading boat. May have to jump a ground wire off light stud to trailer frame bolt for good ground.

Don't mean to rub it in but one of the few things Minn. has done right is a permanent sticker on the tongue once and for all. In the same line of thought though I mounted LED tail lights on top of boarding guides AND run a dedicated ground wire to each light so you don't rely on grounding through the rusty old frame. You are welcome.
 
On one boat trailer I made an aluminum bracket similar to the cheap plastic. I like the system I have on my scull better though. It is attached to a board that has the taillights and slides into the handles on the back of the scull. goes in the back of the truck when I am preparing the boat to launch.
