On a cold and snowy late November day. My friend and I where out hunting Ducks on the Hudson River. It was early in the morning and we just about had are limit already. As the tide started to change. I heard a sound I very rarely hear around these parts of New York State. It was a very large flock of Snow Geese. And they where touching down on the other side of the Hudson. The storm must of changed there flight pattern. We almost never see snow geese in large flocks around here. I told my friend let them sit over there for a little while. Their going to rest and most of them will sleep after they eat . Now scared! that some other hunter had seen the same thing we did. We waited! nothing came up or down the river. Its go time I said to my friend: As we started up then across the Hudson River. I told my friend! to only pick out one bird in the flock. Don't flock shot or pull your head of your shot gun. Act like its only one bird. Then I told him to get down and don't move until I tell you. As we drifted with the tide and the wind. We started getting closer and closer. There wasn't any movement by the birds, As we closed in on the giant flock. The birds started looking bigger and bigger. Now we were within a hundred yards. Still no movement. The snow started to fall even harder. There was know way they could see us. By now the boat was a floating snow ball. I told my friend get ready. We are now within sixty yards. Not yet , Not yet! The tide and wind are still working with us. The closer we get the better. I got us right into the flock, the birds jump. Bang bang bang. Geese all over the place. None dead ! but all over. They flew right over our heads. Making a sound that only a season snow goose hunter would know. Up up and away they went in the falling snow.
My friend was sick and I was laughing my butt off. There was know way he couldn't of hit one. But nothing was on the water but feathers. We drove up and down to see if one dropped out of the sky. Like snow geese do sometimes. But nothing but a great story to tell. It was all worth it. If your wondering where was my gun. It was up front with my friend. Hoping he could of got more them three shots off. It was a great day with lots of dead ducks. And lots of lucky geese.[;)]
