Depreciation

Kelly Blue Book does publish values but from what I've seen boats are much more subject to what the market will bare. Some of the most common boats may have fairly reliable resale values.

Makes for interesting conversation. If I refer to the most commonly used insurance estimating software they only reference small non-motorized water craft like a stealth skiff. They apply a depreciation rate of 10% per year. If the boat is still serviceable at 10 years most adjusters would probably value the boat at 65%. So much depends on make and style. If the boat is an unpopular maker or hull design you will have trouble giving it away at 10 years old. 1994 OMC Bass Boats such as Stratos, Hydrosport etc. originally sold for $12,000 to $15,000 are on the market now for $4,000 to $5,000. A Ranger bass boat that age will sell for twice that amount. The Lund and Alumacraft Duckers are selling for $900 to $1,500. I suspect they sold for less than $500 when new. I would check the internet for comprables in your area. Good Luck

Phil~

I have no real info to contribute. But - except for gunning vessels - all boat prices are much lower in the Fall than in the Spring. It's a good way to find a motor and trailer for a duckboat.

All the best,

SJS

Is this a question about the boat's actual or estimated value, or about depreciation for tax or accounting purposes? Two very different things.

Jeff, the question is to understand how low can someone realistically offer someone before you are lowballing.

Very subjective, as I'm sure you are aware of. I have an example to add to the discussion that may be helpful to you. I talked to a guy at the ramp the other day in a 14' original TDB, think he said '87 if that is possible. From 20' away it looked good, but had a custom gray/white/black camo paint job. Anyway he said he was selling it for $9500 but when I told him I just bought my boat this year and was all set, he said something like no harm trying to ask a high price. I read that as he knew it was not worth that much. Sooo my point is, offer what you want to pay, the seller might be asking what he is dreaming to get and would settle for much less. I don't buy into the whole BS of offending a seller with a "low" offer. I'm not talking about a stupid offer of pennies on the dollar, but still the seller can just say no.

If it is a 4 year old boat... I know some people will get piss and shut down.. I don't like doing the "dance"... I do that for work. I want to understand what the fair price is .. look at the high and low boundries?read the buyer and make an off.. on the low end.. but not be stupid and insulting.

Well for a 4 year old boat in very good condition, the original buyer took the initial depreciation hit. I'd say for instance if the boat cost 9k new, maybe a fair price today would be somewhere around $5,500 on the low, to $7,500 on the high. This is just my opinion, but sounds good to me. As others stated the desirability of the boat means a lot. What boat are you looking at? and good luck!

Kool!

I bought an Estuary this year from this site. Hull #22, not sure what year that makes it, 2009 15hp Yamaha 2 stroke, and a galvanized load right trailer. All in excellent condition and maintained well. I paid $6500. not sure how that measures up to my previous advice, but I wanted it, I scraped up the cash and I bought it. I'd do it again. I firmly believe if you can afford something and want it, then go get it! I also hate the BS games that can be associated with buying.

Do you think your new yacht is priced right?

It might be priced right.. but more than I am willing to pay at asking price... It is at the top of NADA.. and then some. I don't need it ? BUT REALLY WANT IT.... LOL.. But I have a price in mind... if that doesn't float his boat.. I can walk away...

Phil,

Only knowing that you've mentioned a Duckwater in other posts. If a 21'er is in your eye with say a 90 to 115 hp on a tandem trailer? I'm guessing $18,000 to $22,000 is the asking price. Am I close? That would be a hell of a rig if you could get it for say under $18,000.

Close ? I agree with the price points being a heck of a deal or not. Honestly, Since these are not like buying a used 16' flatbottom, If the price is what I will feel is acceptable in the end... I will not worry about a few buck here or there. If I really want it, and we are close on price, I would be stupid to not buy it, and let some other schmuck get it for a little more than I would have offered.

.but no... 150-175... in the $20-$35 range. Some are in line some are not. Like everything, it depends on the motivation to sell, and understanding the market. I was just curious as to a general rule of thumb.

I understand HOW to buy. I am a global sourcing manager for a Fortune 500 company. ALL that being said, it depends on the motivation or need of both parties, and if it is a buyers or sellers market. It is even harder when you are accustomed to being the prettiest girl at the dance (work)? and on personal stuff it is not always the case. :(

There is a 2014 that is high by most feelings... but .. If I was the seller, I would have a hard time taking a 30%+ hit on that boat too.

AND, that my friend is why I'm picking up the plywood I ordered from Menards this week to replace my floor in my 16' Lund. A boat half that price will never be in my future. Of course I'm always pursing the want ads and have seen several of these posted. I hope it's a Sea Class and not a Bay model for that kind of money. But I'd sure come up and hunt with you if you get one...hehe!
