    Flexshaft/Foredom

I used a HF hanging motor for a lot of years before I got my Foredom Tx. Still works well and has a pretty respectable amount of power. Get yourself an actual foredoom 44T handpiece to spin those 1/4" bits.

    Hand Planer

You can do a decent job with the classic Stanley #5 jack plane for a regular, decoy sized block. Pretty ubiquoutous and not nearly as pricy as #7 jointer. I used to have a #7, but I ended up selling it because I didn't find it useful for the blocks I was working with. A block plane is...

DECEMBER - What's on your work bench?

My goto finish for workbench tops is a homemade wiping varnish. 1/3 varnish, 1/3 thinner (Mineral spirits or turpentine), and 1/3 oil (boiled linseed or tung oil). Flood it onto the surface, let it sit for 10-15 minutes then wipe off the excess. let it dry for a bit and repeat at least three...

DECEMBER - What's on your work bench?

Indeed it is some old-growth red cedar I got from Tom Kelly. My first plan was to torch it to raise some of the growth rings. I figured it was the perfect wood for that, but I didn't like how they ended up laying out on the other side. So then I decided to leave the spokeshave marks. Then I was...

DECEMBER - What's on your work bench?

Here's an in-process wood duck I'm working on. It's the first bird I've done with carved eyes. I've had a ball with this so far. My original plan was to leave it spoke-shaved, but in the end I just went ahead and sanded the whole thing...

NOVEMBER - What's on your work bench?

Speaking of wood ducks, here's one I finished up recently. It got finished along with a bunch of other birds that I had been working on for a long time. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7480/15754316515_2bbf9025aa_z.jpg

    Question on decoy paint colors

I generally like to stick with classic pigments over the modern variants. I like viridian over phthalo green BS as my cool green and cobalt green over permanent or emerald green as my warm shade. Of course, I would also never want to be without chromium oxide for a dull green. I use all three...

    Pocket Knife

I'm with Jeff. Spyderco Delica is my EDC. The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle design is just about perfect. Keeps it light, and provides grip no matter what way you hold it. VG-10 steel, jumping on the blade's spine where you'd put your thumb, adjustable pocket clip, and of course the...

    Golden paint question....

When I was painting with Goldens, I had a TON of regular tube paints and I used their Super Loaded Matte Medium, that I bought from Lou Tisch, to bring down the shine. You can use regular matte medium, but you have to use a LOT of it. Hit up Lou to see if he still carries it.

    Spokeshaves...

I've used one before in Tom Newell's shop and know some others who have them and like them. It was perfectly nice to use. The hock blade he uses is really a quality piece of steel. I imagine you'll be pretty satisfied with it if a wooden shave is what you're after. The brass sole option looks...

    Spokeshaves...

Daves Shaves seem to be pretty popular: http://www.ncworkshops.com/ Rutgers used to make some as well. Not sure if he still does but you may want to reach out to him. People seem to be happy with them.

    Sleeping Scaup

Also, keep in mind that certain animals sleep differently depending on their surroundings and evolution. Some animals, especially ones susceptible to predators, sleep by resting half of their brains at a time. This can sometimes manifest itself by the animal closing one eye at a time. when...

    Old Holland paint question.

On a related note Brandon, it IS tough to go back to Grumbachers after you've used Old Hollands isn't it? I made the same move myself a while back. I figured that in the grand scheme of things, paint is actually pretty cheap when you consider how much you use overall on a single decoy. Initial...

    Oil painting tricks?

Can you explain why you want to cut it and/or what exactly you are trying to do? Without any specifics, my immediate response is to say do nothing to it. squeeze paints right onto the palette, mix up your colors, and start putting it on the decoy.
