I put the trim tabs on not so much out of need but more out want. Sam recommends a 25hp motor for this boat. It use to be 30hp. After searching this site and talking to other people who have built the boat, the concensus was that 25 is not enough. So I researched 30 and 40hp motors. I also...

Thanks Cody, When I was trying to decide which boat to build, the pictures of yours helped. Now I have to get used to sitting this low in the water. Oh - look at the Feelfree gravity kayak seat. I bought 2 of these and they are a perfect seat solution for these boats. Not cheap but works...

Thanks Tod, I'll have to check it with a straight edge. The manual calls for 0.4" - 1.2" below the anti cav plate. And are lower end of that range. I have run it trimmed all the way down and tabs all the way up. I get plenty of bow rise if I trim the motor up a little and slow down. I have to...

Thanks for the info Tom. Tomorrow I'll call the tohatsu rep I've been dealing with and run it by him. We started off in the middle with a 12 pitch prop. I'll have to play around with it to see what's going on.

I have a 17.5' run-a-bout (bow rider) that does the same thing. Once on plane, when I trim up a some and get an extra 5-8 mph out of it, the bow definetiy comes down a little more. There seems to be a sweet spot there. This boat did that too. I did get some proposing with it and put the trim...

Hi Dave, I have not run it without the trim tabs. With the tabs on, this boat gets on plane very easily even when they are all the way up (level with and about 3/8" up from bottom). I planned to use them from the very beginning. I'm a little heavy in the stern with the 40hp and batteries. They...

Tod, Thanks. You're close to me. Maybe in warmer weather we can get together.

Hi all, Thanks for your comments. I do trim it up some of the time when running. The anti cab plate is about an inch below the keel. When trimmed down I have pretty much full range of turning but not when trimmed up. In early spring I will definitely be cutting the corners off the sponsons. I...

I had the motor trimmed down. Most of the time while running. But that still doesn't explain it. I'm going to call the tohatsu rep and talk to him about it this week.

Hi Eric , Thanks for the reply. Yes I was expecting 40 easy. I have a 12 pitch prop on it. But I'm not sure going down on pitch will make that much difference. It's a brand new 2 stroke also.

I think around 20-25. It should do way better than that. Saturday me and hunting buddy went out and had the boat under "full load" and at WOT was only getting up to 3000rmp. Now it was running and sounding great but that's where I would expect it to be with this boat. This thing should fly.

Phil, Yes he does. Though the maiden voyage was only 3 weeks ago and 2nd was on Saturday. There are a few things to tweak and improvements to make. It's not reaching the rpm range at WOT. So I may have to go down in pitch on the prop.

    BB3 Build

Thanks Brad, I grew up in Wilmington NC. Out of highs I'll I had no ideal what I wanted to do. So I attended a boat building program at Cafe Fear Community College. It was a year long course. I did the first half which focused on woodworking skills and the beginning of fiberglass work. At that...

    BB3 Build

Hi Steve, I appreciate the kind words on the photos. Lol, ok about the PVC. This is the engineer in me. I want the boat "clean" on the inside. No gas tank on the floor or wires going here or there. Im putting an e-start motor on the boat. The PVC is for running wires through the foam...

    BB3 Build

Hi all. I'm getting close to finishing my Devlin BB3 project. I would be interested in hearing previous builders seat options. Also, has anyone uses a bead of 5200 in lue of epoxy for the small inside deck filets. https://www.facebook.com/jason.dismukes/posts/10206139751887464

    2-stroke motors

I've been looking at etec's 30-40 for a while until someone told me about tohatsu. They look like the most versatile. You can get a new 2 stroke, short shaft with e-start, tiller, and tilt/trim. I've talked to several people about them. Very good motors. I should clarify... Smallest 2 stroke...
