Snow Goose Build Paint Up & Update

Thank you Brad. Please know that I do love her and hope to enjoy her for years to come. My great hope is to take my son and daughter fishing with her some time soon. I have learned a great deal during this build, my first. Someday I hope to build another boat, perhaps one with a little cabin...

Snow Goose Build Paint Up & Update

Thanks Pete. And thank you for your previous comments and help. Gloss is indeed tough. Upon closer inspection, the imperfection of the builder is very apparent in this boat : ) a friend of mine uses the phrase "20 footer" when referring to his boats. Looks good from 20' away! Many thanks. K

Snow Goose Build Paint Up & Update

I hope this finds everyone doing well. When I last posted, I was struggling to come to grips with a bright finish gone wrong. After receiving very good advice and council here, I made the decision to paint instead of attempting a trickier veneer solution. As one experienced member noted, bright...

Thank you Sir. I am planning to use primer and will look for Pre-Kote (different than PrimeKote I believe). Thank you for the compliment! Have a wonderful weekend. - Kris

Thanks Todd. I agree that 1/8" ply (which I'm pretty sure I could get) might work. The problem is how that added layer would integrate into the rest of the decking. I added a few pictures of the bow to my original post at the top of this page so you can see what I've got happening. Best, - K

Please help me decide how to handle a big boat build problem...

Hi Todd. I actually did consider tearing it off and re-doing, but it's tricky business because I have some solid-wood trim running over the ply along the center seam and at the front edges of the bow. So I'd have to cut around that. Additionally, I wouldn't be able to clamp the piece back in...

That's beautiful Mark. Thank you for sharing and for the insight. May I ask what you used to adhere the assembled veneer to the substrate of the ski? I've read a few posts that suggest applying a veneer to ply using lightly thickened epoxy. That seems to make sense. But many have reported that...

Please help me decide how to handle a big boat build problem...

Hey Paul. Did I see your boat in the water already?! If so, are you sure that suffered enough through the build? As I watched your progress I began to feel like I was moving in super slow motion. Kudos to you! Man... depending on how this fix and/or pain job goes, camo may be the next step! ...

Please help me decide how to handle a big boat build problem...

Thank you for taking so much time and effort to help Steve. Your boats, as always, are things of beauty. If I do end up painting (which seems increasingly likely), I don't know if they'll turn out quite as nicely as those... As I closely inspected the overall decking this morning before running...

Thank you very much Brandon! In the bright light of day it occurs to me that painting may, in fact, be the best move after all. But regardless, I'll keep heart. Best, - Kris

Please help me decide how to handle a big boat build problem...

You've definitely given me something to sink my teeth into Dave. Thank you so much for the thought. Before throwing in the towel and hauling out the paint brush I'm going to pursue the concept of stripping the section to bear wood and applying a veneer. It may be wishful thinking, but if I can...

Man! I never thought about veneer! That's an amazing idea Dave... I wonder if I could get sheets big enough... Maybe if I contact the plywood supplier who's a few towns over... Do you think I could apply veneer using neat epoxy? Thank you so much for this idea Dave. Maybe that's worth a shot.

I hear you Pete. And thanks. Perhaps I bit off a bit more than I could chew on this first build. I will have some bright work on the shear, coaming, bow trim, bench and console. I think I may need to accept what is and start looking into pleasing paint colors... Many thanks Pete.

Please help me decide how to handle a big boat build problem...

Thanks Dave. I think the trouble I'd run into stripping everything back to wood is the fact that it will be nigh impossible to get the plywood evenly unified. Because I stained the ply it's very easy to get unevenness from sanding. If I were on timbers (maybe next build) I'd absolutely strip it...

Thank you very much Cody. I appreciate your kind words and good thoughts. I have some nice bow trim as well as the shear clamp, coaming, rear bench and console all of solid wood. Most has already received 4 coats of varnish and it looks great. But the bug expanse of deck would have looked...

Good people of the forum. I've always been able to count on you for sage advice in the past. Once again I look to your experience to help me figure out how to deal with a big self-created problem on my build... After three years of building, I am close to completing my Sam...

Making floor supports in a bluebill?

Man... I had exactly the same problem and it took me a while to figure it out. That's the "stringer". I got some advice from a few of the guys on this forum who built Devlin boats. What I ended up doing is using a single piece of 5/4 (1"-thick) white oak. I used that because I happened to have a...

Making floor supports in a bluebill?

Hi Paul. Your build looks fantastic! Really nice, clean-looking work. Kudos. What timbers are you referring to? The limber? Floor timbers that support the sole? Best, - Kris
