Identify this BBSB

My buddy bought this BBSB in 2019 from a guy on Saginaw Bay. It had NJ registration on the hull. It’s cedar. He’s looking to identify the make model and builder if possible. I figure someone on here either built it or knows something about it. TIA

Bob Keeney will be able to help on this once he sees it. It looks very nice. There are some custom things on those oarlocks, which are a traditional style, that might also be a clue(at least to who made the oarlocks)

Reminds me of JH Perinne.

The rounded oarlock braces are throwing me though, maybe simonson whose lines echo perrine. .

This looks like an earlier Bill Simonsen or atleast one he could have restored. It’s an older boat that logo from north bay canvas on the breakwater is from late 80s early 90s. If I was a betting man I would say it’s an early Bill Simonsen. Beautiful sneakbox and it’s amazing it’s a sailor and has the rigging hope you sail it one day they are a blast!

Bob et al~

I met Bill back at Tuckerton in 2017 - and helped a friend buy this Sneakbox from him. I tended to a few minor imperfections in my shop....

sm VanSant - via Bill Simonson and JCW.JPG

Bill believed it was a VanSant - which I later learned were the "Cadillacs" of Barnegats. Do I recall correctly that VanSants were built in Atlantic City?

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Bill. Somewhere I have a nice photo of him at Tuckerton. His daughter featured the photo at his memorial service. I need to search some older hard drives....

I look forward to meeting you a month from now.

All the best,

SJS

Steve, yes there is no doubt that’s a VanSant. I own a Van Sant that my Great grandfather bought in 1922 it is in my shop waiting for restoration. The VanSants were building boats as early as 1712 with the Leeks on the Mullica River. They had at one time 15 ship yards in south jersey the main one being in gardens basin in Atlantic City they built every style of boat lifeguard boat, sneakboxs, fishing boats and cruisers. There sneakboxs are considered Cadillacs by many sneakbox enthusiasts because of the fair sharp lines high quality workmanship and the fact that there feather edge sneakboxs had a full harping were the top and bottom ribs met the harping ran the length of the boat were most builder stoped the harping midship. Another tell there box’s have a bow eye that is pined and riveted over through the top deck a bottom of the boat.

I agree it looks like a Bill Simonsen. I enjoy seeing the different photos. Many have made it into my folder of ideas for the Widgeon. I was just thinking about the prop for the oarlocks and here is perfect photo of the divot for the prop to fit into.

Thank you for posting.

Welcome Randy. I'm Ed James on Facebook and the guy that suggested this site to you this morning. I see you're getting some interest in your boat already. I might suggest changing your name from netman to your real name. It's a requirement on this site. You probably saw that when signing up. A good group of people here with a lot of knowledge.

Got the name changed! I appreciate the help!
