I decided to reinforce the oarlocks with brass rod due to concerns about a small split in the white oak oarlock on one side. I drilled and installed them on each side of the oarlock socket.

Using a drill press I first drilled a counterbore using a forstner bit then the hole for the rods. I liberally applied beeswax to the rods and installed in the oar lock. Counterbores were filled with wooden plugs to allow later access...

Rich, I used hardwood dowel to reinforce it. Cut spiral groove in dowel and glued with West System. Like the threaded rod, but would not wax it and would West the rod...

Rich,

Good tip. I thought of driving a drift and riveting over the head. I had no luck trying to peen the end despite heating. The rod would snap after a few hammer blows. This was plan B.

If this fails you idea will be plan C. My only concern would be the glued in dowel preventing wood movement
