You know you’re lucky when:

You roll to the river with a couple of buddies that helped form the "holy trinity" of duckers (that you know)

the occasion is a reunion of sorts
it is good

One ducker is now in Montana full time
*cept for today

Here is the bastage, with a younger version of Ol’ Alex

and another one is going to be gone
before the next 4th of July (also Montana)

My buddy Zachariah

In the frenzy at the waters edge,

you run in to an old hunting buddy
time is of the essence,

conversations brief.

dogs unload,
waders strap and cinch

floatcoats click

motors fire

props cut the muddy water

with a set of hounds upon the bow,
you split the darkness

You know you’re lucky when:

you dropped off the hounds and gear & buddies
and realize no one "tipped the waiter"
at the launch

You leave your Ancient dog with the boys & run all the way back to where you started

drive your bomber
right up onto the beach

run to leave a few bucks in the slot under the door

&
in the process of doing so

meet a guy that you’d never met (face to face)
a “buddy of a buddy”

a solid dude

Perhaps the frenzied manner in which the bomber crashed upon the shore
telegraphed my identity

he walked up and said
"Hey man, I'm "so and so"
We shook hands

So I made a friend

Lucky again!

You know you’re lucky when:

Earlier in the morning,
some folks up the way expressed their concern
that we might be too close to each other to hunt the place we went

We exchanged a bit of dialog (nothing bad
just that they were concerned about the distances).

So,
to see with eyes you own,
you drive up to their set

while idling next to them you say

“I am not going to shoot over you guys,
I am not going to s**** you out of birds,

and we are not going to skybust”

You are lucky when:

they are cordial and you are all able to hunt the spot together.
For what may be the last hunt you can ever pull with an ancient bird dog that is trying to show a youngster the ropes

To whomever you gentlemen were:
Thank you

for working with us on the space

we did our best to shoot safe,
Let the birds work,

and let you guys get shots at the ones that were winging your way anyway
Looks like you had a good day too.

(thanks for not making it a big "knock down drag out deal")

So,
Lucky again!

Lastly,
You know you are lucky when:
You wrap it up and make the trip on smooth water with sun on your back

Arrive at the shore to see a couple of your old hunting buddies laughing at you

at the very place where the morning started.

What is all the laughing about?

Well,
because in your hasty departure,

You forget to: ROLL UP THE WINDOWS on the truck,

You know you are lucky to find everything in it untouched.

No back eyes,
Nobody shot a dog,
And no boats got sunk
No fists flew

Oh yeah, and to be able to roll it up and get out before a really bad hour of sideways rain & wind that strips all of the leaves right off of the cottonwoods

is good too!

May your days afield be blessed with good folks
Good tides

And good dogs
