Wetlander primer on and dry.

For those considering wetlander, I bought the 2-layer kit that includes 1/2 gallon of primer and 1/2 gallon of topcoat (and the hardener for each). Color is "Anchor", though I dont know if the topcoat will be the same as the primer. Will certainly post pictures once the topcoat is on.

I rolled the primer on, and found coverage to be pretty good and fairly even. As the application literature predicted, the first coat did fisheye a bit, but a follow-up roll after I finished a subsequent section resolved 80% of that issue. I mixed the entire 1/2 gallon at once and poured about 1/3 of it into a paint tray, lightly recapping the container. The product literature says it has a 1 hour pot life. I got 1 thin coat on the boat (could still see some "bleed through" of the wood and fairing). By the time I was done with the first coat, the sections I'd started were dry to the touch of the back of a finger, so I got a second thin coat on as well. Two thin coats took pretty much the entire 1/2 gallon - so their recommended kit for a boat the SG size is right on.

Lightly scuffed the bottom today, hope to get the topcoat on either tomorrow or Thursday.

Nice! I bought the same kit in Olive Drab. I don't think I'll get to apply it until next week. Glad to hear that you can mix enough for a couple of coats all at once.

That looks pretty good. I’m not crazy about the green stripe.

Henry,
Looks awesome. Just a word of warning on the last coat, be careful not to starve the roller when applying. I made that mistake and it lifted the previous coat so I had to strip it and start over. I definitely gained some appreciation of how tough Wetlander is when trying to remove it. RM

That was a bummer for sure! Did you sand it off?

Any differences you found between top coat and primer? Does it not dry on thw surface as quickly? What was your experience with pot life?

I jumped on it right away so a combination of scraping and sanding. The biggest difference between primer and top coat is the top coat has alot more silicone so it fish eyes even worse. Just use the same procedure you did today with a follow up roll once it stiffens up a bit. My mistake was letting the roller get overly dry and it lifted the previous coat. Pot life is about the same and it seems to dry at the same rate.

If I remember correctly I purchased the three layer kit and thought that I could cut a fat hog in the ass by dividing the industrial primer in half. One half for the bottom of the hull and the other half for the sole for a waterproof bathtub floor. Basically I didn't have enough product for the hull portion and I tried to spread it too thin. What do boatbuilders call mistakes...experience! You will be fine. RM

Many thanks.

Good morning, Henry~

I am really enjoying your build - nice work every step of the way!

Two questions:

1) What masking tape are you using for the water line? Looks like Frog Tape? I ask because I have had bad luck with Duck Tape Pro of late. It is hard to pull off the roll without it tearing into long - and very irritating - strips.

2) I notice that the Wetlander website does not mention canoes for its product. I can imagine it being very handy when paddling over floating vegetation and especially over just-under-the-surface-logs that are so common in beaver marshes. I wonder how much weight it adds. (I have not yet contacted the company...)

All the best!

Steve,

The company is based in Wilton, NY. Isn't that roughly two towns over from you? A visit would be in order.

I'm looking forward to applying it to the rail skiff. I bought it for the same reason you are considering it, getting the boat over all the vegetation in a marsh.

Thanks Steve!

1 - yes, frog tape. I've used it for years on home painting projects and prefer it to blue tape. Comes off the roll pretty easily, and also off the surface easily, yet sticks well enough for painting.

2 - Scott Logan was very responsive to my questions when I was researching. scott.hogan@wearloncorp.com is his contact info. I generally considered weight in my thinking, but don't think I ever asked how much it added. I was considering a dynel, and just figured wetlander would almost certainly weigh less than dynel plus extra epoxy.
