I have a 4 rivers and a 5 hp outboard on it . I made a jack plate for it and lifted the motor maybe 4 or 5 inches . Than I tilt the motor in middle notch and I can run in shallow water until I run out of water to float the boat. Its still has the sharp turning ability and whole loy cheaper.

There is a lond spring that the connecting rod goes into that may be weak but I doult thats the trouble . He would have to do a heck of lot of shootong. I would think more in the line of cleaning and giving it a drink of oil. A shot on the firing pin should do the trick. Good luck.
